Change of Ownership

There are different situations in which the ownership of the system and/or SRECs changes.

When a solar system changes hands, its SREC enrollment needs to be updated so the right person earns and is paid. SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Certificates) are the certificates a solar system earns for the clean power it produces.

You bought a home with solar, or otherwise took ownership of a system

Buying a home with solar, inheriting a system, or receiving one through a divorce all work the same way. If the system is in a state with an SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Certificate) program, you can usually get signed up. The first thing to confirm is whether the system was already enrolled:

  • Check whether you have any paperwork for the system.

  • Share the full name(s) of the previous owner(s) with us, and we can help confirm its status.

If it was already enrolled, the enrollment needs to be updated to you (and, depending on your state, we may also need to update the system with the state's SREC office). Who owns the system and its SRECs is determined by the terms of the home sale, estate (in the case of a death), or divorce agreement. We'll ask for proof of ownership and a signed ownership-transfer form (we provide the form); some situations need a few additional items.

You sold your home, or no longer own the system

To start closing out your RECmint account:

  1. In your RECmint account, choose "Report a change of ownership" and follow the prompts.

  2. If you don't see that option, send us the closing date and we'll have a team member take it from there.

We'll reach out if anything else is needed. If you earned SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Certificates) while you owned the system, we'll send payment for those.

**If you were on the 15-year Upfront payout option, where you were paid once in advance for 15 years of your system's SRECs, an ownership change ends that agreement — and selling within the term usually means you owe RECmint back a pro-rated portion of the payment you already received. We work out the amount for your account and tell you what it is. On Market, or on a 3-year or 5-year Fixed Rate agreement, the transfer closes out your account and you keep what you were paid.
